Lassay les Chateaux is a beautiful town in Mayenne about an hour and a halfs drive from Caen. With a population of 2500 its more of a village . Lassay has three chateaux, one of which is the best example of its kind, a XV Century next to a beautiful lake and medieval gardens. Well worth a visit (apart from the stunning scenery) for the eccentric octagenarian tour guide who likes to rib the British! Its claim to fame is that Victor Hugo was refused entry to the castle as he was too scruffy! The local pub is now named after him.
Lassay has lots of little bars and shops and in the Rosarie has the national collection of roses, the stream which feeds the Mayenne river runs through the town and theres a picture opportunity on every corner. In the summer costumed re-enactments take place along side the lake and through the village.

"I wouldnt recommend this for young children but for older children Interested in history these castles are worth a visit. The guided tour is done by a man who grew up working in the Castle so knows it intimately. We were allowed to pull up the drawbridge which was a bonus" (AP, Nov 2010)
