First Aider Amanda Hollingworth

"I believe that everyone should know how to a save a life; it is a life skill. It is especially important for parents, it is an extension of our roles as a parent to nurture care for and protect our childrens’ lives." (AH, June 2011)

  • Why do you believe it is so important that parents assist a First Aid course?
I believe that everyone should know how to a save a life; it is a life skill. It is especially important for parents, it is an extension of our roles as a parent to nurture care for and protect our childrens’ lives. We are responsible for our childrens’ lives

What type of courses do you offer and what do they consist of?
I offer a standard course which teaches you what you need to know and what you need to do in the first 10 minutes of a serious accident, you can save a life in these first 10 minutes before the pompiers arrive! I also make bespoke courses for people who want to learn more First Aid.

In what kind of situations could a parent be needed to administer a Life Saving Technique?
The most important that is in the event of drowning, but choking and severe bleeding are of equal importance.

What are the most common types of accidents among children?
    Choking, drowning and bleeding

Approximately what percentage of adults know basic First Aid?
Each country is different, the last statistic I read for France was as low as 6%!

What is the first thing a parent should do if they see their child choking on food?
Adminster back blows with the heel of your hand between the shoulder blades followed by the Heimlich procedure if the blockage of the airway continues. Both of these methods need to be demonstrated!

If a child is bleeding heavily, what should a parent do?
The immediate aim is to control the bleeding, this by pressure and bandaging, again there are other steps that need to be demonstrated.

How much do your courses cost? And where do you operate?
My normal charge is 75 euros per person, but I do family and group rates, just contact me and I can discount my prices, particularly as I believe everyone should be able to save a life. I operate in the Alpes Maritimes, but I would be prepared to travel out of this region.
